THERMO

EXT313A

BRIEF:

A digital thermometer is a simple electronic device, with a straight forward sequence of use. This refined product the provides opportunity for an aesthetic redesign, using the stock internals to create new product.

TOOLS:

- Physical sketching ideating and designing

- SolidWorks
-Iterating / designing
-Hi-fidelity digital product

- Keyshot
-Custom textures
-Complex & accurate labels and display textures
-Large, organised projects

The project started with a strong vision, I wanted to push my abilities surrounding complex organic forms.

USING 1:1 SCANS OF THE PCB, ACCURATE PCB TEXTURES, WITH BUMP MAPS AND SPECUALRITY CAN BE EASILY MADE:

OUTCOME:

The project allowed for deep exploration and experimentation with visualisation techniques. The complex custom materials and lighting techniques allowed for skills that would be extremely applicable to my future as a designer.
The pure design aspect of the thermometer was also satisfying, being able to flex my tastes and CAD skills purely for the purpose of an aesthetic redesign.

LEARNED SKILLS:

- Design process and individual time management.
- Value of consideration of design complexity and achievability
- Value of design in CAD vs sketching
- Keyshot file management
- SolidWorks tools and features for product design

Although I learned a lot, the project timeline was finishing with a CAD file I knew I couldn’t work further with.
The project pivoted, allowing me to further explore complex CAD tools, if a form I could map out my process prior to starting.
